Aug. 27th, 2009 01:36 pm Firing Weekend

The NCEFG's 2009 Firing weekend starts tomorrow! I'll be on site from about 2pm on, come by if you want to glaze. The burn starts Saturday morning and will go all day. As always check the Get Involved page for the things you should bring. Don't forget food and bedding, and warm clothing - looks like it will be foggy. See you all there!

Aug. 23rd, 2009 08:58 am Peru - Last Day

Today is my last day in Peru. We have errands to run and places to eat at. Much of the work this year was cleaning sherds from a mold that managed to creep into the bags and attack the pottery. I decided each moldy bag had a "seed sherd" or one that seemed to be so bad it had started it all. This arybalo neck was probably the worst of the year, it could have been responsible for all the moldy bags.

My favorite pots of the season came out of last year's excavation and were pulled aside for us to look at (as opposed to analyze or process). This small arybalo...

Normally they are about this size or bigger:

And this tiny arybalo...

Aren't they cute? Everyone say "awe."
Toodles all, see you soon. NCEFG firing next weekend!

Aug. 15th, 2009 06:28 pm Peru Ceramic Analysis

For those of you who are interested in what I've been up to down here in Peru, here is a sample. All the various sherds set out to dry.
On the table in the hall.

On the cement outside the lab.

In the lab and on the bead.

And the reason we are drying and cleaning these sherds.

Aug. 11th, 2009 09:43 pm Anthropology Humor

So our hotel part serves as a kind of school and our lounge area is full of American exchange college youts. There is this one tall gangly blonde nuevo-hippy type, who insists on wearing a bit of hemp string tied around his scraggly unwashed too-long hair.

MC: Don't you think that looks kind of like those penis strings the yanimami wear?
TB: Absolutely.
MC: Do you think he realizes he's wearing it wrong?
TB: It's like a penis string tiara.
MC: Does that make him a dickhead?
TB: Ah, anthropology humor.

Aug. 8th, 2009 03:36 pm Eating Alpaca & Other Events of Interest

So, alpaca. Alpaca is delicious. It tastes kind of like a mix between pork, venison, and beef. And here in Cuzco at a place called Macondo they do this thing with alpaca that is as near to nirvana as one can hope to get on this earth.

First they pepper it and rub it with garlic, then they wrap it in bacon (yes, bacon!) then they sear it in butter so that it gets a nice brown crispy skin but is still so tender you can cut it with a butter knife (which is a good thing because at Macondo's they don't have steak knives). Then they slather it in a creamy white wine sauce with mushrooms, then they top it with a few slivers of onion compote.

If I were to have one last meal before I died, it would be this, with garlic mashed potatoes and a pint of maracuya juice.

I'm telling you, nirvana.
